Urban_Morph

There has been a growing interests in architects , urban theorists, designers in exploring ways of integrating the new urban conditions in their discourses, design thinking and process. This dynamic spatial conditions echoes in the works and philosophy of Henri Bergson, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. Gilles Delalex states that in this philosophy, architecture takes a new active role that allows the coexistence and the random influx of various forces, and their possible evolution over time.

Urban_Morph is an advanced design workshop focusing on generative design approach which embrace non-linear, fluid and dynamic morphogenesis, involving forms and programmes rather than styles and aesthetics. The workshop will explore  potential design opportunities using field conditions. Defining the field condition, architect and theorist Stan Allen describes it as “any formal or spatial matrix capable of unifying diverse elements while respecting the identity of each. Field configurations are loosely bounded aggregates characterized by porosity and local interconnectivity…What is intended here is a close attention to the production of difference at the local scale, even while maintaining a relative indifference to the form of the whole.” [Allen, 1992]

The five day intensive workshop will introduce participants to the conceptual and technical domain of parametric design using generative process and techniques that creates unique design possibilities.

What we will do

The various sessions in the workshop focus from basic to advance modelling techniques in 3dsmax and ZBrush. The aim is to teach participants, the techniques and methodologies of edit poly and procedural modeling, with a neat workflow and proper stacking(no random clicks),enabling them with skillsets for further individual work. The initial stage of workshop will introduce students to the mentioned tools through series of intensive modelling sessions, which will be further used to explore generative design concepts and methodologies. In parallel to this, students will be developing  small scale initial design concept/object and will be exploring different tools.3dsmax and Zbrush will be used extensively to achieve the final design object/solution. There will be a mixed and backforth workflow between these two platforms to achieve design intricacy.

In the further sessions the participants will move to a macro scale, exploring the animation techniques in 3dsmax (used in film industry)in conjunction with other complex modelling tools(learned in the first session) to generate morphed urban conditions. Further, these morphed urban micro environments shall be evaluated by volumetric study, visual analysis, daylight assessment, solar exposure and basic CFD analysis for making an informed design decision using performance simulation and geospatial tools(Rhino/Grasshopper). The participants will also be taught to effectively use rendering engines like vray and keyshot to achieve desirable effect in short period of time.

By attending the workshop participants will be equipped with computational skills to explore alternative design approaches  to address and negotiate diverse scales of the design settings. This workshop is open to students and professionals from wide range of design related discipline and not limited to Architecture and Urban design.Number of participants will be limited, to provide each participant maximum dedicated time with instructors.

The workshop has two sessions. The participants have the option to enroll either in PART 1 or FULL WORKSHOP.

MA Architecture & Urbanism (Computational Architecture) University of East London (UEL), UK.

Abeer Basha is an Architectural and computational designer based in London UK. His design and research interests lies in computational design , digital modelling, intersections of architecture and digital practices. .He completed his Masters in computational design at UEL ,UK. His thesis, under supervision of Fulvio Wirz(Associate,Zaha Hadid Architects) focussed on generative urbanism using computational design approach grounded in swarm intelligence.

Abeer is the principle and founder of L_eA- Lab for experimental Architecture, a research based design practice that explores generative design principles within the domain of architecture, urbanism and product design. He has previosuly worked in Atkins Dubai and DLN Hongkong .Currently he is also assisting students in the digital fabrication lab at School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering ACE at UEL.
